For Parents
Everything you need to know about how Sprinkles keeps stories safe, age-appropriate, and fun for your kids.
What is Sprinkles?
Sprinkles is a website where you or your child can type a story idea and get back a fully written, fully illustrated children's story in seconds. Think of it like an instant picture book maker — describe the story you want, and AI creates the words and pictures.
Stories are designed for kids: simple language, engaging characters, positive themes, and colorful illustrations on every page. You can read stories that other people have made, or create your own.
Content Safety
Sprinkles is built as a children's content platform, and content safety is fundamental to how it works:
- AI safety filters — the AI models used by Sprinkles have built-in safety filters that prevent generation of violent, explicit, or otherwise inappropriate content. These filters are applied to both text and images.
- Children's story system prompt — the AI is specifically instructed to create age-appropriate children's stories. It's tuned for gentle narratives, positive messages, and kid-friendly language.
- Community guidelines — our Terms of Use prohibit submitting prompts intended to generate harmful or inappropriate content. Users who violate these guidelines may have their accounts suspended.
- Admin moderation — we have admin tools to review and remove stories that don't meet our content standards.
A note on AI-generated content: while our safety measures are robust, AI is not perfect. We recommend parents preview stories before sharing them with younger children, especially for stories created by other users. If you find content that seems inappropriate, please contact us at hello@sprinklesstories.com.
Age Appropriateness
Sprinkles stories are generally designed for children ages 3-10, though the content adapts based on the prompt. A prompt about a bunny finding flowers will produce a simpler story than one about a space adventure with complex plot twists.
- Ages 3-5: Keep prompts simple and concrete. "A puppy makes new friends at the park" works well. The AI will produce short, simple sentences and bright, clear illustrations.
- Ages 5-8: You can use more detailed prompts. The AI handles adventures, mysteries, and friendship themes well at this level.
- Ages 8-10+: More complex prompts with multiple characters, plot twists, and world-building work great. The episodic feature is especially fun for older kids who want to build longer narratives.
The language level and complexity of the story generally mirrors the complexity of the prompt. Simple prompt, simple story. Detailed prompt, richer story.
Privacy and Data
We take privacy seriously, especially when it comes to a platform used by families. Here's what you should know:
- Minimal data collection — we collect only what's needed: your Google profile name, email, and picture for your account, and the story prompts you submit.
- No tracking cookies — we use a single session cookie to keep you logged in. We don't use advertising trackers or sell data.
- Voice recordings are not stored — if your child uses the microphone feature, the audio is sent for transcription and immediately discarded. We don't keep recordings.
- Stories are public by default — this is important to know. When you or your child creates a story, it appears in the public library. You can unlist it from your dashboard if you prefer.
- No personal info in stories — we recommend not including real names, locations, or personal details in story prompts, since the generated stories are public.
For the complete details, read our Privacy Policy.
Account and Age Requirements
- Reading requires no account — anyone can browse and read stories on Sprinkles without signing in or providing any information.
- Creating stories requires Google sign-in — this ensures every story has an identifiable author and gives us the ability to moderate content.
- Age 13+ for accounts — per our terms, users must be at least 13 to create an account. Children under 13 should use Sprinkles only with a parent or guardian's involvement and consent.
- Parent-assisted creation — the most common use case for younger kids is parent-assisted: the parent signs in with their own Google account, and the child tells them what story they want. The parent types (or the child speaks) the prompt, and they read the story together.
Tips for Using Sprinkles with Your Kids
- Make it collaborative — sit together and come up with the prompt as a team. "What should the story be about? Who's the main character? Where do they go?" The prompting process itself is a creative exercise.
- Use the voice feature — younger kids who can't type well can tap the microphone and describe their story idea out loud. It's a natural way for them to participate.
- Upload their drawings — if your child draws a character, take a photo and upload it. The AI will incorporate the character into the story, which is magical for kids who see their own art come to life in a narrative.
- Build ongoing series — use the episode feature to create continuing adventures with the same characters. Kids love returning to characters they know, and the AI maintains continuity across episodes.
- Read stories from the community — browse the Sprinkles library for stories other families have created. It's a great source of bedtime stories, and no account is needed to read.
- Preview before sharing — if your child creates a story independently, give it a quick read before they share the link widely. AI-generated content is generally safe, but a parental check is always a good idea.
- Try different languages — if your family speaks multiple languages, try creating stories in each one. It's a fun way to practice reading in a second language.
What Sprinkles Is Not
To set the right expectations, here are some things Sprinkles is not:
- Not a replacement for real books — Sprinkles stories are fun and creative, but they complement traditional children's literature, not replace it. We encourage reading real books too.
- Not a social network — there are no friend lists, messaging, comments, or social features. Users can see each other's stories and profiles, but there's no direct communication between users on the platform.
- Not a babysitter — while content safety is a priority, AI-generated content should always be used with appropriate parental awareness, especially for younger children.
