Red never opened the basket. Not once, all the way to Grandma Ivy, however long the forest path was. A thin grey wolf watched her from between the trees.
"That basket smells good," said the wolf. "Where are you going?" Red pointed down the path. The wolf ran ahead on quiet feet.
At the cottage the wolf was already in the bed, wearing Grandma's glasses. "What big eyes you have," said Red. "All the better to see you," said the wolf. His stomach growled very loudly.
Red opened the basket. She set the bread and honey on the quilt, and the wolf ate until there was nothing left. Grandma Ivy came out of the cupboard and put the kettle on.
The wolf went back to the trees with a loaf under his arm. "What a big smile you have," called Red. "All the better to say thank you," he said.
