Milo remembered the big pile of leftover metal scraps from the water pump. "Don't give up!" he shouted to the others. "I have an idea!" He turned around and ran all the way back to the workshop tunnel as fast as his little legs could go.
In the workshop, Milo found heavy springs, a sturdy pipe, and a jagged gear. *Clank, twist, hammer!* He built a noisy, shaking machine. It was a Super-Jackhammer designed to smash the hardest stones.
Milo dragged the heavy machine back to the giant grey rock. "Stand back, everyone!" he called out. Max ran forward to help him hold the handle because it was very heavy.
They pressed the button. *RAT-A-TAT-TAT-BOOM!* The jackhammer shook the whole tunnel. Cracks wiggled across the giant rock like lightning bolts, and then—CRASH!—the rock crumbled into tiny pebbles.
Through the hole, they saw a lonely mole sitting under a bush in the Zoo. It was their cousin, Barnaby! "Quick, grab my hand!" yelled Milo, reaching through the dust.
Barnaby jumped into the tunnel, and the moles cheered. "You saved me!" he cried, hugging Milo and Max. But suddenly, the ground gave a deep, scary rumble.
The vibration from the jackhammer had been too strong! The tunnel behind them collapsed with a loud *THUD*, filling the path back to Mole Town with dirt. They were safe together, but they were trapped with no way home... to be continued.
