The waterfall came down white and loud, and Psyduck stood in the shallow part doing nothing at all. At the bottom, Magikarp threw himself at the wall of water and slid back down. "I have to get to the top," said Magikarp. Psyduck said, "Psy?"
Psyduck decided to help. He pressed both hands to his head and squeezed his eyes shut, and his head began to ache the way it always did. A rock rose out of the river, wobbled, and dropped in exactly the wrong place. "Psy," said Psyduck, and sat down in the water.
So he stopped squeezing and just looked, which was the thing he was best at. Off to one side the river came down in small flat steps, each one no higher than a fish. Psyduck pointed. Magikarp went up the steps one hop at a time, and then he was at the top.
From the top, Psyduck could see a long way. He did not look at the hills. He looked straight back down at the pool, and the pool was full of orange. Every Magikarp in it was hitting the same wrong place on the rock, again and again.
Psyduck went back down and stood at the mouth of the little stone steps. He put out one arm and said, "Psy." One came, then four, then all of them, hopping up the flat stones in a long orange line. "Psy?" had always been a question, and now it was the way up.
