Tales from the Spore Valley

In the lush valley of Spore, the turtles lived in the most beautiful houses you could ever imagine. Every home was a giant, colorful mushroom with a sturdy oak door and a chimney that puffed vanilla-scented smoke. The turtles, with their shiny green shells and bright white spots, loved to polish their front steps every morning. Today was the Great Swap, a special holiday where turtles traded houses for one week to make new friends. Little Tilly was very nervous because she had drawn the short straw. Instead of a tall, red toadstool, she had to stay in the tiny, gray button mushroom at the edge of the woods. Her friends waved down from their balconies on the high, spotted mushrooms, shouting happily. "Don't worry, Tilly!" they called out, though they looked quite cozy up there. Tilly sighed and walked up to the tiny gray door, which was no taller than a dandelion. Tilly took a deep breath, squeezed her shell through the little frame, and closed her eyes, expecting to bump her head on the ceiling. But when she opened her eyes, she didn't see a cramped room at all. She gasped in pure amazement. The tiny gray mushroom was just the entrance to a massive, glittering palace hidden underground! There were slides made of soft moss, pools of glowing water, and a ceiling filled with crystals that looked like stars. It was the biggest house in the whole village! Tilly laughed with delight as she slid down a spiral slide, landing softly in a pile of giant flower petals. She realized that the house that looked the smallest on the outside was actually full of the biggest surprises on the inside. That night, Tilly invited all the other turtles down for a grand party beneath the earth. Everyone danced and splashed in the glowing pools, agreeing that you can never judge a mushroom by its cap. The sun began to set over the mushroom village as Tilly heard a familiar heavy knock on the tiny wooden door. She scrambled up the mossy ladder from the secret cavern to the cramped entryway above. It was her Mom and Dad, looking very tired from their long day working at the Leaf Factory. "Oh, my poor Tilly," sighed Mom, squeezing her large spotted shell through the narrow frame. "I am so sorry you have to stay in this tiny button mushroom for the week." Dad tried to step inside but accidentally bumped his head on a low hanging shelf. Tilly just grinned and adjusted the yellow ribbon on her head. "It's not cramped at all!" she chirped happily. "You just have to know which loose floorboard to press!" She stomped her foot, and suddenly, the floor swung open to reveal the glowing, mossy slide. Mom dropped her basket in shock and Dad’s eyes went wide with surprise. "Hold on tight!" yelled Tilly as she jumped in. Whoosh! The whole family slid down the spiral chute, winding deep underground past glowing roots and shimmering stones. They landed softly on a giant, bouncy orange sponge that smelled like fresh rain. Mom and Dad gasped as they looked around at the crystal ceiling and the flowing underground streams. But the biggest surprise was waiting for them right by the sparkling pool. A giant blue snail wearing a bowtie was slowly sliding toward them. "Good evening," the snail said in a deep, slow voice, balancing a tray of algae cookies on his shell. "We have been expecting you." Tilly hugged her surprised parents, happy to share the secret of the magical butler who came with the house. Just as the blue snail butler was pouring tea for Mom and Dad, a loud "Ding-ding!" echoed from the tiny entrance room far above their heads. Tilly looked up toward the ceiling of the cave. "That sounds like Leo's bicycle bell!" she exclaimed. A moment later, a round turtle head wearing a bright red helmet peeked over the edge of the slide. It was Leo, Tilly's older brother. He was straddling a shiny silver bicycle and looking very confused at the gaping hole in the floorboards. "Be careful, Leo!" shouted Dad, but it was too late. Leo leaned forward too far to see where his family was, and his front wheel dipped over the edge of the mossy slide. With a surprised yelp, he rolled right into the tunnel! Instead of falling, Leo's tires gripped the soft, curved moss perfectly. He zoomed down the spiral ramp, picking up speed as he banked around the glowing turns. "Wheeeee!" he cheered, realizing this was the best bike path ever. Leo shot out of the bottom of the slide and skidded to a halt near the crystal pool, splashing a little water on his wheels. Mom covered her eyes, but Leo was grinning from ear to ear. "Did you see that?" he asked breathlessly. The blue snail butler clapped his hands slowly. "An impressive entrance, young sir," he said politely. Leo looked around at the vast underground space and realized the smooth stone paths were perfect for riding. For the rest of the evening, Leo zoomed around the crystal pillars while Tilly chased him, laughing. The tiny house above was cramped, but down here, they had all the room in the world to play. A spooky orange fog rolled through Spore Valley for Halloween, making the glowing windows of the mushroom houses look like watching eyes. Pumpkin vines curled around the chimneys, and the turtles hung spiderwebs made of silver silk on their front doors. Leo wanted to be the fastest creature in the forest, so he taped long, fuzzy pink ears to his red bicycle helmet to look like a hare. Mom and Dad painted their shells bright yellow and wore green leafy collars to dress up as giant sunflowers. Leo pedaled his bike slowly next to his parents as they visited the neighbors, shouting "Trick or Treat!" at every round wooden door. His basket was getting heavy with candied clover and sugar-coated pebbles. When they returned to their tiny gray mushroom house at the edge of the woods, they saw something strange. A white, floating shape was hovering right in front of their little door, making a low, moaning sound. Mom gasped and Dad stopped in his tracks, but Leo felt brave in his fast hare costume. He rolled his bicycle forward and rang his shiny bell loudly. "Ding-ding! Go away, ghost!" he shouted. The ghost chuckled, and the white sheet slowly lifted up to reveal the Blue Snail Butler underneath! "I am just guarding the entrance, Master Leo," the snail said with a slow, slimy smile. They all squeezed into the tiny house and slid down the slide to their secret underground home. The Snail had turned the crystal cave into a glow-in-the-dark dance floor for the best Halloween party ever.
