Baby Ro would not sleep, and the house had run out of ideas. So Sable the cat went out to collect quiet things. She had a very good list.
She brought back a feather, and a moth's wing, and a curl of dust from under the stairs. She laid them by the cot. Baby Ro looked at them and cried anyway.
So Sable brought quieter things. Snow off the sill. The inside of a shell. A shadow, folded up small. Not a sound out of any of them, and not a sound out of Baby Ro either.
By midnight Sable had run out of quiet. She climbed up onto the blanket, put her chin down, and gave up. Then something started up in her chest all by itself.
It was not a quiet thing at all. It went on and on like a small engine under the floor. Grandmother came to the door and stopped, because Baby Ro was asleep.
