Fen the hare could beat anyone to the old oak and back. He said so every morning. Otto the tortoise said he would try, and the whole meadow came to watch.
Fen shot away so fast the daisies bent. Otto put one foot, then the next. By the time he reached the halfway stone, Fen was asleep in the shade.
Otto passed the oak. He passed Fen, who did not stir. One foot, then the next, and Otto crossed the line while the meadow cheered.
But the cheering stopped and everyone went home to lunch. Otto stood in the empty field. Then he turned round and went all the way back to the oak.
"Fen," he said. "Wake up. Everyone's gone." Fen rubbed his eyes and looked at the empty track. Then the two of them walked home together, one foot, then the next.
